This interactive show teaches nutrition through music and movement. Jump with Jill is an innovative answer to childhood obesity prevention, formatted as a kid-appropriate rock ‘n roll concert with healthy eating and exercise messages.

Jump with Jill and the Detroit Lions Support Fuel Up to Play 60

Enjoy the video from our day with the Detroit Lions at Ford Field. We kicked off the day with a professional session for FUTP60 student ambassadors, ran drills with Detroit Lions coaching staff, lunched, then closed the day by dancing to the Jump with Jill Beat of Our Body flashmob on the 50 yard line. Jill is on stage with current wide receiver Nate Burleson and Roary the Lion. On the sidelines, there’s retired players Luther Ellis and Herman Moore. On the field, there’s 400 teachers and students from Detroit schools. And yes, that is Beat of Our Body playing on the jumbotron at Ford Field!

Program Helps Green Bay-Area Kids Get Healthy Inside & Out

The rain didn’t stop dozens of Green Bay-area kids from having a rocking good time Wednesday at Colburn Park. Local parks and recreation departments teamed up for the first Green Bay Area Healthy Youth Inside & Out Extravaganza. The health initiative is designed to promote healthy habits in children. At 3 p.m., the stage was taken over by the main event. Jill Jayne is a nationally recognized registered dietitian and musician who strives to make being healthy hip and fun. A native of Pittsburgh, Jayne tours the country under the name Rockstar Nutritionist to promote healthy lifestyles. Through her performances, she teaches children about healthy eating habits, exercising, and overall ways of keeping bodies in shape. “Today we are gonna talk and rock about how to take care of our bodies,” said Jayne. “I’m not just a registered dietitian, I’m a musician. So, I know how to get down.”

“A Good Time” at the School Nutrition Association Conference

We had “A Good Time” in Music City with the School Nutrition Association. As you can see, school food service staff know how to enjoy a professional conference. Check out my watermelon carving and an original dance with my avatar to Alan Jackson.

Friday in Florida

In May, the Eat More Watermelon! Jump with Jill Tour landed for a week in Orlando, Florida. The shows rolled out a USDA Team Nutrition grant for the Orange County Public Schools, managed by Teresa Douglas Shipley. In this video, The Rockstar Nutritionist joins brother-rocker Mark Jayne and sound engineer Trevor Gast to the most annoying tune about a day of the week ever sung, though similar in content to the Black Eyed Peas 2008 weekday naming hit “Tonight’s Gonna Be a Goodnight,” the former written by a 13-year old and the latter by a grammy winner. When I was 13, I played terribly on the basketball team, folded up notes to my friends, and decorated my bookcovers with magazine ads. I’m so glad the world heard my music long after I finished middle school!

Great Plains Tour

In my first trip to the Great Plains, I enjoyed a wide range of audiences and engagements. In Missouri, I worked with University of Missouri professor Sara Gable to perform at a Head Start, elementary schools, professional development with Extension staff, and the Missouri Dietetic Association. Onward to Nebraska, I worked with the Greater Omaha After School Alliance in the mayor’s office and Nebraska Action for Healthy Kids. Most importantly, I found a new prop that will forever be a part of the Jump with Jill show: an enormous corn hat.

Jill Rocks a Baseball Stadium

The Jump with Jill performance at a professional baseball stadium was a career highlight! The We Can! (Ways to Enhance Children’s Activity & Nutrition) Program, a partnership of Charles County Department of Community Services, the Charles County Department of Health, and Civista Health, invited the community of Waldorf, MD to experience the rock ‘n roll nutrition show for FREE on the first weekend in April. The stadium is home to the Southern Maryland Blue Crabs. I woke up to a torrential rain, which subsided only for the length of the performance. We loaded our equipment onto the field with a go cart. Though the wind was too fierce for much of our usual set, I did perform right on the third base line. Before starting the show, I ceremoniously swept off home plate and made my clamorous crowd yell, “PLAY BALL!” I jmped up on the dug out for “The Beat of the Body” and brought down young fans onto the field for “The Bone Rap.” Trevor ran sound from the stadium sound booth, and the reverb was so intense, I invested in a new piece of sound equipment called in-ears just for this occasion.

Thanks to all the families that came out to enjoy the show!

Jill Returns to Alma

I returned to my alma mater to headline the 16th Annual Mark Luchinsky Memorial Lecture held at the restored State Theatre in downtown State College. With strawberries dressed in tuxedos, and my dad, I rocked a talk titled “Debunk the Junk” which featured the media’s influence on how we think about ourselves and our food.

Jill Performs with the New York Jets in Support of Fuel Up to Play 60

As National Nutrition Month comes to a close, The Rockstar Nutritionist goes out in style with the New York Jets! Jill sports her high calcium foods and sings about the benefits of exercise to support the NFL/Dairy Council Partnership, Fuel Up to Play 60. Students from Newark, NJ; Jersey City, NJ; and Brooklyn, NY came to train at the Jets practice facility in Florham Park, NJ. These students will become student ambassadors for the Fuel Up to Play 60 program in their schools. We were joined by former players Wesley Walker (’77-’90), Bruce Harper (’77-’85), and strength and conditioning coach Bill Hughan. All of us reinforced similar messages– eat breakfast, eat less junk food, and exercise more. I also emphasized the importance of “walking the walk” when you “talk the talk” as a leader.

Fat Tuesday in the Fattest City

Corpus Christi, TX was recently deemed the fattest city in the U.S. by Men’s Health Magazine, so fellow dietitian Jacqueline Replogle called The Rockstar Nutritionist to the rescue. Jacqueline’s organization, The Junior League of Corpus Christi, pulled together funding and services from H.E.B. Grocery Stores, Omni Hotels, United Healthcare, and Time Warner to make 23 Jump with Jill shows in the most at risk schools in Corpus Christi Independent School District possible. and today, dressed in green, yellow, and purple. For their work to address this heavy issue, accepted Mayor Joe Adame’s Proclamation on behalf of The Junior League. Our two week tour ended with a wonderfully free community event, complete with healthy snacks, inflatable rides, information on the farmer’s market, a Cartwheel bus, and a Jump with Jill performance. When we weren’t working, I got a sunburn in March and rode my bicycle around what I soon learned was “The real windy city”!

California Jill

For my first Jump with Jill tour to the West Coast, I pulled out every pop song about California on my iPod and rocked my way out to Redding, California. While I came to California expecting Daisy Dukes with bikinis on top, I instead found mountains with snow on top. Northern California is known more for it’s walking trails and cattle… especially hairy cattle… and for their love of the Rockstar Nutritionist. Our shows in schools were a huge success! I was greeted by passionate fans dressed in Jill paraphernalia and our final event free to the community was very well attended. I believe it was because of the billboard! And what else could I do but find it and climb it? We enjoyed visiting the most well known tourist attraction in the area, the SunDial Bridge, and dining at Grilla Bites in downtown Redding where they serve actual vegetables and meat.

Back to work… in FLORDIA!

The Rockstar Nutritionist kicks off the first show day of 2011… in FLORIDA! We began with professional development for Collier County food service providers and educators, and finished with performances for students at Golden Gate Elementary Schools. Our “Resident Rockstar,” registered dietitian Twyla Leigh, is not only a food service supervisor, she is also an RD in the Army reserve to support troop nutrition. Twyla treated us to her backyard of seasonal treats including starfruit, avocado, grapefruit, oranges, pineapple, and hundreds of kinds of orchids. We were flattered by the gracious hospitality and hope to make this an annual event!

Jill Performs with the Buffalo Bills

Last week I had the pleasure of performing with the Buffalo Bills as part of the National Dairy Council and National Football League to support their “Fuel Up to Play 60″ event. The “Fuel Up to Play 60″ campaign is an important one, incorporating both the nutrition AND physical activity aspects to their educational efforts. They rely on the celebrity status of the players and their connections throughout most major US cities to enhance their reach. The Dairy Council partnership makes sense when so many kids replace milk with soda and sweetened drinks without the calcium needed for strong teeth and bones.

Even at 5′10″, it is a humbling experience to stand next to a group of NFL players. One hundred kids from the Buffalo area joined us, along with about 25 of the Buffalo Bills roster who donated their only day off for the week. Antonio Coleman, Dominique Harris, Cardaro Howard, and the first Chinese-American to ever play in the NFL, Ed Wang joined me on stage. My inflatable instruments never looked so small! I used the players as physique specimens of the importance of fitness and asked them to share a little about their healthy food routines. I was as infatuated with the players as they were with me! Ed Wang filmed me for most of the show, apparently to show his friends that there really is a Rockstar Nutritionist.
